Teddington rocks, says this no-longer-smug Chiswickian

As a committed (some would say smug) Chiswickian, life beyond W4 seems, well, not worth experiencing. How limited a view that is, I discovered on a recent visit to your home town.

As a passionate supporter of local, independent shops, I've watched, despairingly, the march of the chains to Chiswick. My guess is that they are coming in your direction soon but, for now, what a rich source you have of one-off clothes shops, unusual arty/gifty stores, and unique cafes and restaurants.

We strolled along your main drag (it's a bit complicated, having a two-part high street, so forgive me for not remembering which bit I was in), heading first for a coffee. I'm a decaff girl so I'm particularly discerning: with no caffeine kick to kick-start, taste is everything. Girasole got it right - a delicious large cup served in very congenial surroundings and with a smile (but please don't tell my nutritionist about the almond twist that I ordered accidentally).

We dropped in on the glamorously glittery Jenny Blanc - full of inspiration for hard-to-buy-for friends' birthdays (lovely candle holders), something small to thank hosts instead of a bottle of wine, plus sparkly accessories (mirrors) to add a touch of style at home.

Next came clothes - and great delight as I spotted the hard-to-find brand, Not Your Daughter's Jeans, in Via. I'll be back when the new season's stock arrives - grateful for the team's helpful attention and, no doubt, needing the jeans for their stomach-pulling-in technology to disguise the effects of yet more almond pastry.

I can't resist a bit of a step back in time and browsing briefly (it was almost closing time) in Mela Mela was a treat. With more time next time, I hope to indulge my liking of handbags and hats of yesteryear.

And I aim to stay long enough to eat in Prem - highly recommended by the Teddington friend who persuaded me out of my far-too-comfortable comfort zone.

Smugness in Chiswick is what led to us being invaded by chains. At the risk of being bossy, if you want Teddington to maintain its individual charm, you need to support your independent local shops and businesses with passion. Please, don't walk on by; go in and buy.

As an ex Chiswickian I can understand your dismay at the chain gang spoiling the 'village' feel of you home town. Chiswick maintains a classy cosmopolitan image as I like to think we do here in Teddington, oh dear I'm sounding like a snob (that's coz I am!).

However we are not without said chains ourselves with a carpet shop and a bed store whos exterior presentation isn't quite my cup of chai. And I do have M&S as my corner shop, which I love.

My key boast if not the river, is the Landmark Art Centre. But I'll save that for another time.

    Later.
