Teddington People attended the public exhibition of the proposed redevelopment plans for Somerset House, Somerset Road on Monday, 8th March at Teddington Baptist Church, Church Road.

The evening was attended by residents, councillors, members of the borough council and members of Ashill Developments.

The plans were laid out for review by Ashill Developments.

If you were unable to attend the evening, you can see a computer generated version of the proposed developments at http://www.ashilldevelopments.co.uk/developments/somersetroad/home.htm

The site currently consists of buildings built in the 60s which were used as office space and a warehouse.

The offices are still partly occupied, the warehouse empty.

The plans reveal proposals to build 62 new homes.  The new homes will be a mix of flats and houses and of private housing and affordable housing.  Off street parking and cycle spaces will be available.

The plans reveal a definitive contemporary design which Ashill Developments consider will ‘add varied character with the area’.

Residents were voicing their opinions throughout the evening.

Some residents commented that the redevelopment of the site and provision of new housing could be good for Teddington.

Several local retailers commented that they would welcome new customers to Teddington.

However, concerns were raised about:-

1.    the contemporary design being “at odds” with the Edwardian and Victorian character housing surrounding the proposed development

2.    more traffic

3.    the development being very close to the edge of the pavements at Somerset Road and Elmtree Road

4.    existing trees coming down

What do you think of the plans?
