went for the first time to The Lion for lunch on New Year's Day with friends - we were very pleased with the food and with the service. The roast beef was excellent and we'll all go again. Tres bien!!!!!

English pub serving real ales and fine wines with a French dining room
After months of anticipation whilst the new owners completely refurbished this once tired old pub, we were able to book a table for dinner. Having been fans of the previous restaurant in the High Street that was run by the same guys we expected the experience to be a memorable one - and boy it was ! We had a drink at the bar to start ( Guinness very good) and met some friends. After a short while the owner presented us with 2 lovely saucisson to snack on before going through to the restaurant. The decoration throughout is tasteful and restrained and greatly adds to the ambience , to promote a relaxed, friendly but professional buzz. Down to business ! There were 4 in our party and we all like to think of ourselves as budding A.A. Gills, without the pretentions. Both the crab and the baked mussel starters were delicious - we had a bottle of white Italian wine with these that we had never heard of but it was a perfect match, so much so that we quickly ordered a second. Half a lobster - one hot and one cold followed for 2 of the party and both agreed it was beautifully presented, fresh and not fussed over which is all good seafood needs to be. A perfect medium rare steak complete with a delicious gratin and a lovely skate wing with a side order of crisp frites rounded off the mains. Service throughout was attentive and professional. I was the only one able to attempt a dessert and the cheeses did not disappoint - each one explained to me by the knowledgeable owner. So - 4 people - all had starters and mains, one side order frites, 2 red and 2 white bottles of fine wine, 1 cheese board, 3 coffees and unlimited proper French bread throughout and the bill came to under £50 per head without gratuities which to my mind is excellent value. If you want traditional French cooking, tasteful , professional and welcoming ambience we all suggest that it's right on your doorstep at the Lion. I am already looking forward to my next visit .
