Richmond Council is backing a national campaign challenging people to swap sugary foods for healthier alternatives.
People signing up to the ‘Smart Swaps' initiative, launched this month, will agree to make a specific swap such as eating low fat cheese instead of full fat, or drinking diet drinks instead of sugared versions.
Once signed up, participants will receive a free 'Smart Swap' pack of healthy meal ideas, fridge magnets, money-off vouchers and even text alerts reminding them of their swap agreement on days they do the main grocery shop.
Richmond Council Cabinet Member for Health, Cllr Christine Percival, said:
“I am sure that everyone will have indulged more than they should over the past few weeks and at the start of the year we all set out our New Year resolutions.
“Swapping like-for-like food in your diet could help you cut out surprising levels of fat, sugar and ultimately calories. All you need to do is to sign up to make one easy swap to things you eat and drink every day, like swapping sugary drinks to sugar free drinks, milk or water.
“The Smart Swaps campaign has so many ideas for swaps and recipes, there has never been a better time to make a healthier change to your diet than now.”
