For Katie, who lives in Hampton and studied at St Mary's University in Twickenham, BackFlip Performers has always been much more than just a business. Gymnastics has been something she's loved and enjoyed from the age of four.
At school she excelled at the sport and went on to become the first person to win the British Aerobics Championships five times. She has represented the UK at no less than two World and two European championships. After she retired in 2006, she started BackFlip Performers with support from a sports trust set up by Dame Kelly Holmes.
Using the techniques she learnt during her athletics career, she teaches children after school or during the holidays to gain foundation skills in gymnastics so they can progress to the next level. But although technique is important, she emphasises that learning is always fun and very interactive. Her trainers are all CRB-checked and are former gymnasts so they are equally as passionate about the sport as she is.
Explaining the philosophy behind her schools she says: "You can teach young people more about dedication and goal-setting in a gym than in a schoolroom. Teaching children correct techniques to build their gymnastics skills on a solid foundation is something that really motivates me."
As your child progresses they will learn correct techniques for handstands, handspring, cartwheels, roundoffs, and walkovers.
The clubs run all year round and timings allow for easy drop-off after school and on weekends.
