A controversial decision to turn Broom Road tennis courts into new volleyball 'beaches' took effect last Thursday.
The new beach volleyball court at Broom Road.
According to the Council the project, costing £50,000, will add to just a handful of places across the Capital where Beach Volleyball can be played. They will replace netball and tennis courts which the Council says have fallen into disrepair and were underused.
However nearby residents disagree saying the courts were popular and well-used all year round. Disappointed that the decision was not mentioned at regular meetings, residents also questioned whether the courts would be used beyond a few weeks in the summer.
One resident said: "The Rec is shrinking. With the new courts, a children's playground in the middle and the 'wild garden' there is less and less green space where people can walk or go for a run or sit down in the summer. There may be 'strong support" for a local beach volleyball facility from local clubs. However, this is a residential area not the Olympic Stadium. Broom Road, Melbourne Avenue, Langwood Chase, Holmesdale Road and Trowlock Island cannot cope with the visitor parking and noise nuisance from the sports club now. The tennis courts are used in all weathers - why not refurb them?"
But speaking of the decision, Richmond Council Cabinet Member for Sport, Cllr Bond, said: "The Council has brought the beach to Richmond this summer so our young people can enjoy free beach fun on their doorsteps. The beach volleyball courts will bring so much pleasure to so many people across the borough. I urge as many people as possible to bring their children along – and pop along to the beach volleyball sessions too and try their hand at a new sport!"
