Local parent Julie Dawson has just announced a half-term holiday club that teaches children digital skills as well as offering them the opportunity to take part in sporting activities and team building.
A half term holiday camp teaching digital skills but combining this with sporting activity and team building has just been launched for children in Teddington. The week long camp will take place at St Mary's.
The idea came after Ms Dawson noticed that although children are increasingly consuming digital technologies, there is a lack of opportunity for them to learn the skills that might help create them.
With digital technologies playing an increasingly important part in the UK economy, Ms Dawson began to explore what was on offer for children locally. Having seen a variety of children's digital camps that ran successfully in the US, she decided to bring the idea back to South West London and the new Surf & Turf holiday camps have now been launched.
The week-long camp will give children taking part the opportunity to make their own video games, apps and robots.
"Compared to the scale of opportunity that digital technology holds, very few people currently possess either the programming skills or the confidence to create new technology, whether it be websites, apps, computers, robots – or things we can’t even imagine yet," she explains.
"The solution I wanted, but could not find, was an affordable holiday camp that would help to build both a healthy body and a healthy mind. I wanted something for kids that offered digital/enterprise activities as well as sports and team building. "
The holiday camps, aimed at 8-12 year olds, will combine digital coaching with sporting activities and will be held at St Mary's University College. They start this half-term and will run every day from 8.30am-6pm. They are designed to be affordable and will work out at just over £3 an hour.
Also running is a free event at the PayPal offices in Richmond on Saturday 3 November between 1pm-4pm.
